I had a good day yesterday. Walked Dix, took a trip to the grocery store, made a new pasta recipe, read my book. Then around 7:00 or so, we were watching TV and Richard saw something run from the woods. He saw it through the glass door to the screened porch. I got up and opened the door. We immediately heard loud screams. I bolted outside. A neighbor's dog had a newborn deer in our driveway. Where that little thing came from, we have no idea. I started shouting and the dog ran away. This little gal could not have been more than 24 hours old. She was so little, probably no more than 18 pounds. The dog had bitten her ear and sliced her under her right inside thigh. We did not know what to do. I told Richard to call the vets. He did. After forever, they came back and gave him some numbers, but by then, she had calmed down and I could see that the cut wasn't bad. If her mom was around and came and got her, she could clean the wound, remove the scent of blood. The Internet says to leave them alone, even if they appear wounded and lost. So we did. I turned her loose, it took her a while to even stand, she's so new. I backed away and stood still. She stood, got her balance and then walked right over to me and almost touched my knee. Oh, man. Then, she began walking/falling to the woods. We watched and she disappeared into them. I hope we did the right thing. I did not sleep good last night.
We think the dog was chasing the mom and the baby cried out or something. Richard said the dog was running into the woods but suddenly did a U-turn and ran back the other way, toward the driveway. I hope she makes it. I was so worried that handling her would seal her doom, but the Net says no. I hope mom found her. The dog will be back.
I hope you have a good day. I'll be editing this morning. Take care. Over and Out!
